FINANCE and Economic Development Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube told the ruling Zanu-PF Politburo meeting this week that indeed, the economy is imploding and he’s running out of legroom to fix the mess as he is “not a magician”. Both the Finance Minister and Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor John Mangudya on Wednesday came under the cross hairs of the Zanu-PF top decision making organ, with senior Politburo member Obert Mpofu warning that the economy will present problems for ruling party’s targets 5 million votes in the 2023 elections. The Zimbabwe Independent reports that the Politburo summoned the Teo to explain the current crisis and how the country could emerge from runaway inflation, rapid price hikes and a highly unstable exchange rate, among other cri
RECENTLY appointed MDC Alliance spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere says the party’s leader Nelson Chamisa has a clear strategy for defeating the Thokozani Khupe, Douglas Mwonzora and Morgen Komichi camp despite having suffered various setbacks of late. Khupe, tthe interim president of the original MDC founded by Morgan Tsvangirai, recently stormed the Harvest House building and threw the Chamsia camp out of what the Alliance insist are its legitimate headquarters. Chamisa aalso faced humiliation when legislators snubbed his call for Parliament boycott, while key opposition figures such as Dr Tapiwa Mashakada, Paurina Gwanyanya-Mpariwa and Job Sikhala have been reported to be keen on joining the Douglas Mwonzora camp. Despite all the gloom in the Chamisa camp, Mahere put up a brave fa
Zimbabwe police Wednesday arrested three opposition activists on accusations that they lied in saying that they had been abducted and tortured, their lawyers said. The arrests came as a group of U.N. experts spoke against a "reported pattern of disappearances and torture" by government agents in the country. The three opposition women alleged that they were tortured and sexually abused by their abductors, who they said took them from a police station in May after they had been arrested for organizing an anti-government protest. Their abductors were unidentified, but because they took the women from police custody, it appears they were some kind of state agents. The young women were missing for nearly 48 hours before being released by their abductors. While they were bein
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Sello Malema has condemned as “evil and cruel” the corruption currently going on in Zimbabwe, alleged to be perpetuated by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s family and top government leaders, Nehanda Radio can report. In a statement on his microblogging Twitter handle, the EFF leader was blunt in his criticism and said “Pasi neMbavha” (down with thieves). We applaud the fight against corruption and looting of public funds going on in Zimbabwe. It is cruel and evil for anyone regardless of who they are to steal money meant to help citizens fight Covid-19. There is nothing revolutionary or patriotic about thieving. Pasi neMbavha!” Malema said. Government this week cancelled contracts with controversia
The trial of businessman Wicknell Chivayo, accused of swindling the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) of $5,6 million is set to resume in two weeks following the Supreme Court ruling on Monday, overturning his acquittal at the High Court. The Special Anti-Corruption Unit (sacu) welcomed the ruling and now seeks to implement the decision without delay. In a statement yesterday, sacu welcomed the Supreme Court ruling and made it clear that it would implement the court’s decision to the best of its ability. However, the anti-corruption unit said it was aware of statements circulating within the public domain suggesting that criminal charges against Chivayo and his company are to be discontinued. “These sentiments do not represent true facts as they stand. sacu is proceeding w
Opposition Party Slams Arrest, Detention Of Advocate Thabani Mpofu Farai Dziva|Opposition party EFF Zimbabwe has strongly condemned the arrest and detention of Advocate Thabani Mpofu by Emmerson Mnangagwa's government. See statement below: EFF Zimbabwe strongly condemns the arrest and detention of Advocate Thabani Mpofu by the Zimbabwean government. The scale and nature of detentions of opposition figures or those perceived to be opposition figures is unwarranted and unacceptable. It appears that the government of Zimbabwe has taken the route of selectively applying the law whereby those who are part of the regime are spared and those who are perceived as threats by the regime are hounded and brought before the courts. Sadly the government of Zimbabwe by its deeds con
Compared to Emmerson Mnangagwa, Former President Robert Mugabe was at kindergarten level in terms of dictatorship, MDC Alliance leader, Advocate Nelson Chamisa has said. According to Advocate Chamisa, Mnangagwa has taken dictatorship to a shocking level. Speaking to reporters in Harare on Wednesday, Advocate Chamisa said: "It's a banana republic as you can see by the conduct of Mr Mnangagwa. We never thought that Mnangagwa will be worse than Mugabe but instead he has proved Mugabe to be a toddler in dictatorship. Mugabe was actually the banana in pyjamas, at cartoon level. He has actually taken dictatorship to another level. We will have have to make sure that Mnangagwa is shown the way that is shown to all dictators. They have to exit the people's spaces and
THE late MDC founding father Morgan Tsvangirai’s son, Vincent, defied Nelson Chamisa’s directive after he attended the National Assembly sitting yesterday. This comes after the Chamisa faction directed their legislators not to attend Parliament sittings amid a bitter battle for the control of MPs between reinstated MDC-T acting president Thokozani Khupe, who has since recalled four legislators aligned to her rival, Chamisa. During yesterday’s National Assembly sitting, Tsvangirai was joined by other four MDC legislators Constance Chihururu, Joyce Makonya (proportional representatives), Winnie Kankuni (Sunningdale) and David Tekeshe (Makoni Central). Makonya told the Daily News yesterday that Tsvangirai was defending what is right. “We are encouraged by the
As Emmerson Mnangagwa cries for the removal of sanctions, his government continues to violate human rights. Heavily armed police officers raided MDC Alliance officers in Mutare claiming an illegal meeting was taking place. Read the MDC Alliance Manicaland Province full statement below: The MDC Manicaland Province is totally dismayed by the way our police force operates. It’s partisan approach leaves a lot to be desired. On Monday 25 May 2020 the police from Mutare Central led by the DISPOL superintendent Florence Marume visited our party offices in Darlington Suburb heavily armed with AK rifles and dogs on false information that we were holding a meeting. However, what annoys us most is the fact that the very same DISPOL Florence Marume assigned officers from PISI departme
Minister of Foreign Affairs General Sibusiso Moyo says the abduction of three MDC A activists was a stage managed theatrical display, designed to soil the image of the Government. In a statement issued on Monday, Moyo said, government is gravely concerned about the serious allegations made by three (3) female MDC leaders, to the effect that they were subjected to abduction, torture, forced disappearance and s*xual abuse at the hands of suspected State Security agents. Moyo said the dramatic incident was meant to disturb the convening of the SADC Troika Summit and the presence, in Harare, of several Regional Heads of State, and the impending SADC Council of Ministers virtual meeting. He said it is most disconcerting to note that the media and the diplomatic community appear to have
