MUTASA teenager and her four-months-old niece died after a house they were in was reduced to rubbles by a sawdust landslide yesterday afternoon at Wattle Company’s Nyanga Pine Estate.When
The Manica Post visited the scene this afternoon, the house’s rubbles were all covered in burnt sawdust after the landslide following the heavy rains that were received across the province over the past week.
All but a two-roomed blair toilet remained.
In an interview at the site, Wattle Company managing director, Mrs Victoria Jakazi said the bodies of the late Perpetua Muzingembuya (17) and her niece were retrieved immediately after the house was wiped out by the landslide.This is a sad incident and we have since evacuated everyone from the compound village that has been there since the 1990s. We have never experienced such an incident before and we are commiserating with the grieving family,” she said.
Mrs Jakazi said the company will cover all the funeral.
At least a 100 people have been evacuated from the compound village to Selbourne Primary School where they await relocation.
Mutasa Acting District Development Coordinator, Mr Tedious Beto, confirmed the development, saying that efforts were underway to assist the survivors with aid and relocate them.
A survivor of the incident, Anna Bhero (20), said as a result of the landslide, they lost property worth thousands of dollars and that which was recovered was beyond use.
