St Georges College Enrolls Female Students For The First Time

A Local Elite  Private School in Harare St Georges College has for the first time in its 124-year-old history enrolled Girls. The Catholic school run by Jesuit Priests was a predominantly male student institution and the change in enrolment has been welcomed. According to the school authorities, having female students will add balance to the College and also serve as a foundation in preparing the male students for university.

For 2020, The school will enrol 31 female students for Lower 6 with plans to double the enrolment in 2021. The move to break away from tradition follows similar trends world over, The Jesuit  Order has become more inclusive and done away with the exclusion of women in its institutions.

The News and pictures were shared on St George’s College Facebook Page and we have published the announcement without alterations.

“What an extraordinary day for the College taking history forward!”

Our Lower 6 Ladies for 2020 have finally arrived for the first time in 124years!

For this years first intake, 31 Ladies have been selected with the intentions of doubling that number going into 2021.

Multiple factors led to the College making the decision to take this bold step forward:

Firstly, Jesuits Worldwide are beginning to include the “excluded” being the Ladies within schools.

Secondly, we would like to assist our Gents in preparing them for university by allowing them to interact and work alongside the Ladies. Lastly, The addition of Ladies has enabled all our subjects to reach their full capacity.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us through this transition. We really look forward to what the future holds for the College.

This is a good move by the school as the non-integrated schools are a relic of the past that should be done away with. Working alongside members of the opposite sex is a priceless life skill that will prepare you for the future.
