Twenty years after former President Robert Mugabe turned Africa’s bread basket into a basket case, Zimbabwe is giving some land seized from white farmers to war veterans and youth with the hopes of boosting food production and fixing a tattered economy. The war veterans fought Rhodesians from 1966 to 1980 and received government support to take over white-owned commercial farms in return for their unwavering support of the ruling ZANU-PF party According to the World Food Program, Zimbabwe is in urgent need of food assistance because production collapsed after forceful takeover of farms by veterans who have no experience operating them. Economy in deep decline as hunger grows The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank say the Zimbabwe economy is in a free fall and

The opposition MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe has indefinitely postponed the Supreme Court-ordered extraordinary congress (EOC) that was scheduled for July 31 due to lockdown measures that have been in force since March. Khupe had applied for clearance from the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) for direction on how to hold the extraordinary congress set to be attended by over 4 000 delegates. Responding to Khupe’s request, MoHCC acting permanent secretary Gibson Mhlanga, in a letter dated June 29 and addressed to the former, said it was not possible for the EOC to be held under the ongoing health crisis. Speaking during a press briefing at Harvest House on Wednesday, Khupe’s spokesperson, Khaliphani Phugeni, said: We are sad to announce that our July 31 extrao
MDC-T Acting President Thokazi Khupe is set to sworn in Parliament as a Senator for Bulawayo. According to MDC-T sources, Khupe as leader of the party will immediately assume the Leader of Opposition post. The swearing in of Khupe follows the recalling of MDC-T legislators who were rebellious to Khupe and the MDC-T leadership. In 2018 President Emmerson Mnangagwa told the US television Bloomberg TV that he wanted to establish the position of leader of opposition in Parliament in accordance with Commonwealth tradition. "We are going to introduce the office of the leader of the opposition in Parliament," Mnangagwa said then. "This is what we are going to do ourselves but under the former administration (Robert Mugabe's) there was no formal recognition of the leade
Countrymen, citizens, statesmen, kith and kin and my enemies , lend me your eyes and ears . The colossal urination and bastardization of our sovereign constitution by Mr Lipstick has undeniably reached diabolical proportions. Mwonzora declares: Out of 111 MDC Alliance MPs, only 15 sympathies with Chamisa. The matter came to light at the High Court where Chamisa is challenging Khupe and her allies recalling legislators and taking over the MDC Alliances offices countrywide, Mwonzora said the document present by Chamisa’s legal team in court signed by MDC Alliance MPs was a forgery. MDC T Secretary-General Douglas Mwonzora has made sensational claims that less than 15 MDC Alliance MPs are still in Nelson Chamisa’s camp as he said a lot of them have decided to side with his party after the Supreme Court restored the MDC T’s 2014 party structures and declared Nelson Chamisa the illegitimate MDC T leader. Their application was accompanied by forged affidavits. The MPs were made to sign blank a
A United States public relations firm hired by the Zimbabwe government to repair its image in Washington engaged in intense lobbying to project MDC-T president Thokozani Khupe as the legitimate leader of Zimbabwe’s opposition, documents seen by ZimLive reveal. The campaign began last September, shortly after New York-based Mercury Public Affairs LLC began working for Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade as a subcontractor to Mercury International UK. Mercury was planning a trip by Khupe, who was due to lead a delegation of the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD) to the United States from March 25 to March 27 this year, but the trip was cancelled following the outbreak of the coronavirus. President Emmerson Mnangagwa set up POLAD to placate his r
President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government has once again shocked Zimbabweans after Vice President Kembo Mohadi on Wednesday commissioned a ‘small’ Pembi Bridge in Mvurwi, Mashonaland Central, reportedly constructed using US$1,8 million. The State media reported that the government spent US$1,8 million to construct the bridge which it claimed would be a key enabler of economic development in the province. “The bridge and its road approaches were constructed between August 2017 and September 2019 and links various districts in the province as well as other areas in the country,” the report said. “The old low lying single-carriage bridge was a high accident zone with 47 accidents being experienced there in the past years,” the report added. Thokozani Khupe gets $7.5 million from the government. The government believes Khupe is the legitimate leader of the MDC Alliance and is entitled to the $7,4 million despite her having lost the 2018 elections to the same party he now claims to lead. Thokozani Khupe led minority party MDC-T received $7.5 million on Friday from the government despite the Nelson Chamisa led MDC Alliance having obtained a provisional court order barring the Zimbabwean government from disbursing the funds to MDC-T according to the Political Parties Finance Act. Every political party represented in parliament is entitled to receive the funds as required by the Political Parties Finances Act Chapter 2:11. In the provisional order, High Court judge Justice Munangati Manongwa instructed the respondent
