Mr Nelson Chamisa, whose ascension to the helm of the opposition MDC-T in February 2018 was recently nullified by the Supreme Court, has to account for the $7 million he received under the Political Parties Finance Act. Last week, the Supreme Court upheld a High Court ruling which declared Mr Chamisa as an illegitimate leader of the opposition political party and nullified decisions he made while purporting to be president. The party was also ordered to hold its congress within the next three months to correct the illegality, which was considered an affront to the organisation’s founding values and constitution as a social democratic party. Dr Thokozani Khupe, who was declared as the legitimate acting president of the party as the most senior elected official after the demise o
Khupe now holds sway over both the party’s legislators and councillors, who were elected in the 2018 national polls under the MDC Alliance banner. FEARS are mounting regarding the future of the MDC, amid warnings from both within and outside the country’s main opposition that Tuesday’s Supreme Court ruling could have far-reaching implications on the party and its performance in the 2023 elections. Speaking to the Daily News yesterday, both party insiders and political analysts expressed grave concern about the continuing brawling within the party, amid indications that the main protagonists on both sides of the mindless bloodletting are prepared to take the party down with them. “We may not want to admit it, but we are in a royal, mega mess that g
While their foot soldiers fought bloody physical battles in the townships, Zanu PF and MDC-T politicians last week sat on the same table engaging in peaceful discussions. The occasion was a public debate over whether or not public officials should declare their assets. Zanu PF’s Goodson Nguni made stunning accusations, claiming the MDC-T headquarters, Harvest House in central Harare is the property of Ian Makone, the party’s director for elections. Makone is also Chief secretary to Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai. The MDC-T has used its headquarters as a refuge for victims of political violence and this is one issue that the Zanu PF representative questioned. These political parties should tell us whether the safe houses they put displaced people are owned by po
Former Higher and Tertiary Education Minister Jonathan Moyo has threatened to reveal MDC-T Secretary-General Douglas Mwonzora’s plot to overthrow Nelson Chamisa when the two erstwhile colleagues were part of the MDC party which contested the 2018 elections under the MDC Alliance banner. Posting on microblogging site Twitter, Moyo said he has evidence to show that Mwonzora sent him a WhatsApp message, asking for his help to reach the late former President Robert Mugabe to seek sponsorship to fight Chamisa. Wrote Moyo: “He actually sent me a WhatsApp message, asking me to help find him a sponsor (read the late former President Mugabe) to fight @nelsonchamisa. This was after the November 2017 military coup. This fellow is too duplicitous. Let him say nyoo & the V11s will
"I would not want that person as an advisor to my party on democracy, I say this with the greatest respect. He has a right of personal opinion but he is not welcome in the MDC. NEWLY reinstated MDC Secretary-General Douglas Mwonzora has ruled out working with former Zanu-PF propagandist Professor Jonathan Moyo, saying Moyo is a toxic and divisive character who has never apologized for his role in polarizing the Zimbabwean political landscape through his ruthless control of the media while he was still in good books with Zanu-PF. Moyo, who fled the country in November 2017 when the government of Robert Mugabe was toppled by the military, remains in self-exile and has supported the MDC under Nelson Chamisa. “I WOULD NOT WANT THAT PERSON AS AN ADVISOR TO MY PARTY O
MDC Vice President Professor Welshman Ncube has weighed in on the implications of the Supreme Court judgement on the MDC leadership dispute saying the ruling on Tuesday was only academic and impossible to implement because “the eggs cannot be unscrambled”. Below we reproduce the tweets by Professor Ncube. The lie that whomever is the President of the MDCT is President or leader of the MDC Alliance is being propagated by desperate charlatans. Clause 3.1 of the Alliance agreement only provided that (Morgan) Tsvangirai would be the Alliance Presidential candidate for the 2018 elections. In the event of the unavailability of Tsvangirai the Alliance agreement provided that the MDCT would nominate the Presidential candidate, subject to the approval of Alliance partners. Cham
Gokwe-Nembudziya Member of Parliament Mayor Justice Wadyajena has accused prominent activist Advocate Fadzayi Mahere of being behind the ouster of Nelson Chamisa from the helm of MDC. In an unprovoked and unsolicited tweet on Wednesday Wadyajena tore into Advocate Mahere saying, “Cosying up to this sly Microbe lady (Fadzayi Mahere) was Chamisa’s downfall. She‘s BAADDD news. Full of hate for her country and its people and takes money from ANYONE for her OWN interests. In working circles, she’s known for her famous inferiority complex and belief that Americans and Europeans are superior!” This is not the first time that Wadyajena has been accused of making sexist and condescending comments against females. Mwonzora tells Chamisa ‘hand over assets or else we will force you to comply’ Khupe to act for 3 months MDC to go for an extraordinary congress MDC secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora says he will work to reorganize the party’s social base under acting president Thokozani Khupe but their first port of call is to write to Nelson Chamisa to implore him hand-over party assets. This comes after the Supreme Court on Tuesday nullified Chamisa’s appointment as the leader of the opposition MDC party. The court ruled that Khupe was the genuine acting president of the party and directed Khupe to convene an extraordinary congress within three months to elect the party’s new president. In an interview with the Zim Morning Post Mwonzora said prepa
Kudakwashe Mandishona D/Provincial Spokesperson RE: Of the nullity disguised as a ruling by the captured courts. Revolutionary greetings cdes! This afternoon the Captured Supreme Court delivered a judgment which in their skewed and captured minds is supposed to be momentous and therefore changing leadership of the people’s party. This ruling is an empty thunder. Political leaders by their nature are never given their mandate by the courts whether captured or free. Our courts being captured by the murderous Zanu pf regime can only do their masters bidding. The judgment in itself is a nullity and a legal nuisance! The timing of the judgment delivery itself speaks of a court that does not represent their own findings. That the courts chose to deliver the judgment during
HARARE East legislator Tendai Biti has said the Supreme Court ruling of Tuesday afternoon will not change the fact that Nelson Chamisa is the president of the MDC Alliance. Biti was speaking moments after the Supreme Court delivered a shattering judgement that restored the main opposition party to the settings of the 2014 congress, where Chamisa was appointed the MDC Secretary for Policy and Research. The judgement was welcomed by Douglas Mwonzora who becomes the MDC Secretary-General, while Morgen Komichi becomes the National Chairperson as he was so after the 2014 congress. Chamisa lost the October 2014 congress election and was later on rescued by party founder Morgan Tsvangirai who appointed him co-Vice President. Thokozani Khupe is now the i
