Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono says he is starving in prison as he is not being allowed to get warm food from outside. He told his media colleagues on Wednesday when he made a court appearance that he was hungry and in need of food. Chin’ono is languishing in prison after he was arrested at his home last month and charged with ‘inciting violence ahead of the 31 July demonstrations. He denied the charges. His lawyers told the court that the award winning journalist is now surviving by biscuits and water as prison wardens are refusing to allow his relatives and friends to bring him food despite the court granting an order to allow him to have access to food, private medical care and his lawyers. Harare Regional Magistrate Ngoni Nduna on Thursday reserved ruling in the fresh bail application by incarcerated investigative journalist Hopewell Chin’ono to Monday, 24 August 2020. Magistrate Ngoni Nduna asked prosecutors Whisper Mabhaudhi and Tendai Shonhayi, and the defence team led by Advocate Taona Nyamakura to file their written closing submissions by end of day tomorrow, 21 August 2020. Chin’ono has been in custody, first in police remand, and then at the notorious Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison, where he was put in leg irons.

BEATRICE Mtetwa has been permanently barred from representing Hopewell Chin’ono after a Harare court found the top rights lawyer to have abandoned professional conduct but developed personal interest in the journalist’s case. THIEVES broke into the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) and stole seven plasma television sets that were mounted at the health facility’s private ward. The thieves are said to have taken advantage of the absence of security guards manning the premises to raid the ward. The theft is said to have occurred between Friday and Tuesday morning and was discovered on Tuesday by hospital authorities. The hospital has a few patients after UBH was designated as Covid-19 centre while non-Covid-19 patients were transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital.
