Zimbabwe mourns pioneering Kambarami

Zimbabwe mourns pioneering obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Booker Kambarami

By Ayesha Nyanzunda

Zimbabwe’s medical fraternity is mourning the death of renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Booker Kambarami, who died on 15 August 2026 at the age of 76.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care described Dr Kambarami as a pioneer whose contribution to specialist Obstetrics and Gynaecology and women’s healthcare in Zimbabwe will be remembered for generations.

Born on 5 July 1950 in Murewa, Dr Kambarami dedicated more than five decades to medicine and patient care.

He trained in medicine at the University of Rhodesia and obtained his medical degree from the University of Birmingham in 1976. After completing his residency at Harare Central Hospital, he gained further experience at West Middlesex Hospital in the United Kingdom before undertaking specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology through the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Dr Kambarami returned to Zimbabwe in 1984 and went on to serve in both the public and private health sectors. He was also a founding member of Belvedere Maternity Hospital, where he played a role in expanding maternity and women’s health services.

Affectionately known as “Mr Perfect”, he was recognised for his clinical excellence, professionalism and meticulous approach to patient care.

Beyond treating patients, Dr Kambarami was also a respected teacher and mentor who trained and inspired generations of healthcare professionals. His specialist interest in diabetes during pregnancy contributed to the management of complex obstetric cases and the strengthening of clinical practice.

In 2016, the Zimbabwe Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists honoured him for his long and distinguished service to the profession.

The Ministry said his legacy would live on through the patients he treated, families he helped and medical professionals he trained.

Dr Kambarami is survived by his wife, Professor Rose Agatha Kambarami, his children Washington, Donald, Mutsa and Anesu, as well as grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

The Ministry extended its condolences to the Kambarami family, colleagues, former students, patients and the wider medical fraternity.

Zimbabwe has lost one of its distinguished medical pioneers.

*Dr Booker Kambarami.*

Dr Kambarami died on 15 August 2026. On 23 August, the Ministry of Health and Child Care announced his passing. They called him _a clinician par excellence_ and _one of the pioneers who laid the foundation for specialist obstetrics and gynaecology in Zimbabwe_. He was 76, and he gave more than fifty years to medicine.

He was born on 5 July 1950 in Murewa. He trained at the University of Rhodesia and graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1976, in the middle of a war. He did his residency at Harare Central, worked at West Middlesex in the UK, and qualified through the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists at a time when there were very few Black specialists in the field back home.

He could have stayed abroad. Many did.
In 1984, four years into independence, he came back.
Zimbabwe was building hospitals, but buildings alone cannot deliver babies at 3am. The country needed people who knew the difference between a slow labour and a dangerous one. For the next four decades, Dr Kambarami was that person.

He served in both public and private practice. He was a founding member of *Belvedere Maternity Hospital* — perhaps the most tangible thing he built for mothers in this city. Colleagues called him “Mr Perfect.” Not because he wanted praise, but because he refused to let a small thing slide. In his theatre, detail was a safety system. He did my 1st C section in 2000 , my boybwas breached he made sure all went well . And in 2014 unfortunately had a very bad experience with 2nd C section outside Zimbabwe with some other Gyna there was so terrified when I got my last pregnancy in 2019 at 42 had to look for Dr Kambarami flew back home to his care and he assured me and helped me deliver my last at Avenues Clinic with excellent care and safe C section .I salute him in every way .Rest well Mr Perfect you fulfilled your purpose.Financial Tips & Smart Choices

Navy Mesothelioma Lawyer: Asbestos Claims for Veterans

rnrn

Many veterans, especially Navy veterans, were exposed to asbestos during military service. Ships, shipyards, engine rooms, boiler rooms, insulation, pipes, gaskets, valves, pumps, and other equipment commonly involved asbestos-containing materials.

rnrn

A Navy mesothelioma lawyer helps veterans and families investigate asbestos exposure and pursue compensation options.

rnrn

These claims may involve lawsuits against asbestos product manufacturers, asbestos trust funds, and possible veterans benefits.

rnrn

Why Navy Veterans Faced Asbestos Exposure

rnrn

Navy ships historically used asbestos because it resisted heat and fire.

rnrn

Asbestos may have been found in:

rnrn

Boiler insulation
rnPipe insulation
rnEngine rooms
rnTurbines
rnPumps
rnValves
rnGaskets
rnElectrical equipment
rnFireproofing materials
rnDeck materials
rnShipyard repair areas

rnrn

Veterans may have inhaled fibers during repair, maintenance, overhaul, or demolition work.

rnrn

Military Exposure and Civilian Companies

rnrn

Veterans usually do not sue the military for asbestos exposure. Instead, claims often focus on private companies that manufactured, supplied, or sold asbestos-containing products used by the military.

rnrn

A mesothelioma lawyer can help identify those companies.

rnrn

Veterans and Mesothelioma

rnrn

Mesothelioma can take decades to develop after asbestos exposure. A veteran exposed in the 1960s, 1970s, or 1980s may not be diagnosed until many years later.

rnrn

ATSDR notes that asbestos-related diseases usually appear many years after first exposure.

rnrn

What Compensation Options May Exist?

rnrn

Veterans may have several possible options:

rnrn

Asbestos lawsuit
rnAsbestos trust fund claims
rnVA disability benefits
rnDependency and indemnity compensation for survivors
rnMedical care benefits
rnWrongful death claims

rnrn

The right path depends on diagnosis, service history, exposure evidence, and family situation.

rnrn

What Evidence Helps a Navy Asbestos Claim?

rnrn

Useful evidence may include:

rnrn

DD-214
rnShip assignments
rnRate or job title
rnService records
rnShip repair records
rnShipyard employment records
rnCoworker statements
rnProduct identification
rnMedical diagnosis
rnPathology reports
rnVA records

rnrn

A lawyer experienced in Navy asbestos cases may already know which ships and equipment were associated with asbestos products.

rnrn

Common Navy Jobs With Exposure Risk

rnrn

Potentially exposed Navy roles may include:

rnrn

Machinist mates
rnBoiler technicians
rnPipefitters
rnElectricians
rnFiremen
rnEngine room workers
rnShipyard workers
rnHull technicians
rnMechanics
rnMaintenance crews
rnInsulators
rnSeabees

rnrn

Exposure may also have occurred during ship repair or overhaul.

rnrn

Can Family Members File Claims?

rnrn

If a veteran died from mesothelioma, surviving family members may be able to file wrongful death claims or trust fund claims, depending on state law and deadlines.

rnrn

Families should gather medical records, death certificate, service records, and work history.

rnrn

Final Thoughts

rnrn

Navy veterans with mesothelioma may have legal and benefit options connected to asbestos exposure.

rnrn

A Navy mesothelioma lawyer can help investigate shipboard exposure, identify asbestos products, file trust claims, and pursue compensation from responsible companies.

rnrn

Veterans served their country. They deserve clear answers when asbestos exposure leads to serious disease.

GLP-1 Diet Plan: What to Eat While Taking Weight Loss Medication

GLP-1 Diet Plan: What to Eat While Taking Weight Loss Medication

rnrn

GLP-1 weight loss medication can reduce appetite, but that does not mean food no longer matters.

rnrn

In fact, food may matter even more.

rnrn

When your appetite is lower, every meal needs to count. You need enough protein, fiber, fluids, vitamins, and minerals to support your body while losing weight.

rnrn

A GLP-1 diet plan should not be extreme. It should be simple, balanced, and easy to follow.

rnrn

Why Nutrition Matters on GLP-1 Medication

rnrn

Some people make the mistake of eating too little while taking GLP-1 medication. They feel full quickly, skip meals, and assume that less food automatically means better results.

rnrn

But undereating can create problems.

rnrn

You may feel weak, tired, nauseated, or constipated. You may also lose muscle along with fat.

rnrn

A JAMA Internal Medicine guide notes that GLP-1 medications can cause loss of muscle and fat, and it recommends protein and muscle maintenance strategies.

rnrn

The goal is not just weight loss. The goal is healthier weight loss.

rnrn

The Best Foods to Eat on a GLP-1 Diet Plan

rnrn

1. Lean Protein

rnrn

Protein should be the foundation of your meals.

rnrn

Good options include:

rnrn

Chicken
rnTurkey
rnFish
rnEggs
rnGreek yogurt
rnCottage cheese
rnLean beef
rnBeans
rnLentils
rnTofu
rnTempeh
rnProtein shakes when needed

rnrn

If your appetite is very low, protein shakes may help you meet your needs.

rnrn

2. Vegetables

rnrn

Vegetables provide fiber, water, and nutrients.

rnrn

Good choices include:

rnrn

Spinach
rnBroccoli
rnCauliflower
rnGreen beans
rnPeppers
rnCucumber
rnZucchini
rnCarrots
rnCabbage
rnLettuce
rnTomatoes

rnrn

Cooked vegetables may be easier to tolerate than raw vegetables for some people.

rnrn

3. Fiber-Rich Carbohydrates

rnrn

You do not need to fear carbs. Choose better carbs.

rnrn

Good options include:

rnrn

Oats
rnSweet potatoes
rnBrown rice
rnQuinoa
rnBeans
rnLentils
rnWhole-grain bread
rnFruit

rnrn

These foods can support energy and digestion.

rnrn

4. Healthy Fats

rnrn

Healthy fats help with satisfaction, but portions matter because fats are calorie-dense.

rnrn

Good options include:

rnrn

Avocado
rnOlive oil
rnNuts
rnSeeds
rnNatural peanut butter
rnSalmon

rnrn

5. Hydrating Foods and Drinks

rnrn

Hydration matters because appetite changes, nausea, and constipation can be affected by fluid intake.

rnrn

Choose:

rnrn

Water
rnHerbal tea
rnSparkling water
rnBroth
rnWater-rich fruit
rnLow-sugar electrolyte drinks when appropriate

rnrn

Foods That May Worsen Side Effects

rnrn

Some people experience nausea or digestive discomfort on GLP-1 medication.

rnrn

Foods that may worsen symptoms include:

rnrn

Greasy foods
rnLarge heavy meals
rnFried foods
rnHigh-sugar desserts
rnAlcohol
rnVery spicy foods
rnLarge portions of red meat
rnCarbonated drinks for some people

rnrn

Not everyone reacts the same way. Track your own tolerance.

rnrn

rnrn

Avoid large, greasy meals when nausea is worse.

rnrn

Contact your health care provider if nausea is severe, persistent, or you cannot keep fluids down.

rnrn

How to Avoid Constipation

rnrn

Constipation can happen when you eat less, drink less, or reduce fiber.

rnrn

Try:

rnrn

Drinking more water
rnEating vegetables daily
rnAdding fiber slowly
rnWalking after meals
rnEating beans or oats
rnUsing prunes if tolerated
rnDiscussing options with your provider if needed

rnrn

Do not suddenly overload fiber if your stomach is sensitive. Increase gradually.

rnrn

Protein and Muscle Maintenance

rnrn

Protecting muscle should be a priority.

rnrn

Ways to support muscle:

rnrn

Eat protein at every meal
rnStrength train at least 2 days per week
rnWalk regularly
rnAvoid crash dieting
rnDo not skip meals daily
rnUse protein shakes if needed

rnrn

The CDC recommends adults include muscle-strengthening activities at least 2 days per week.

rnrn

What Drinks Are Best?

rnrn

Best choices:

rnSparkling water
rnLow-sugar electrolyte drinks
rnBroth

rnrn

Limit:

rnrn

Soda

rnHigh-calorie coffee drinks

rnrn

Liquid calories can slow progress and may worsen stomach discomfort for some people.

rnrn

Common GLP-1 Diet Mistakes

rnrn

Eating Too Little Protein

rnrn

Low appetite makes it easier to miss protein. Make protein your first priority.

rnrn

Skipping Meals Too Often

rnrn

Skipping meals may lead to low energy or poor nutrient intake.

rnrn

Eating Greasy Foods

rnrn

Greasy meals may worsen nausea or digestive discomfort.

rnrn

Not Drinking Enough Water

rnrn

Lower appetite can reduce thirst cues too. Keep water nearby.

rnrn

Ignoring Strength Training

rnrn

Weight loss without resistance training may increase muscle loss risk.
