Zimbabwe Government To Scrap Student Nurse Salaries

The Zimbabwean government has confirmed it is contemplating a major policy shift that would see student nurses lose their salaries. This potential move is being justified by authorities who claim the current payment structure has caused significant problems within the recruitment process, partly due to an overwhelming number of applicants.

Rationale Behind The Proposed Change

According to a report by the Daily News, the government argues that the salaries have led to complications in recruitment. The article suggests the financial incentive has resulted in a surge of individuals applying for student nurse positions, not all of whom may be driven by a passion for the profession.

This perspective was echoed in public comments on social media. One Facebook user, Alberto Nkosie Dube, stated:

“Yes scrap it, so as student teachers. Many go there without passion for work but to only earn money.”

However, the proposal has not received universal support. Another social media commenter, Butros Butros, challenged the government’s reasoning, arguing:The number of applications doesn’t force authorities to recruit more than they want. What a pathetic reason. You have failed, just accept it. We need new leaders for sure.”

A Sector Already Under Scrutiny

This discussion on student funding comes amidst a separate but related crackdown on fraudulent qualifications within the health sector.  The Ministry of Health and Child Care has intensified its vetting of student nurse applicants. This action was a direct response to a series of fake certificate scandals uncovered at major hospitals like Mpilo Central Hospital and Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare. Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi addressed the issue in the Senate, confirming new verification measures were in placeThe Minister of Health and Child Care is now vetting through ZIMSEC and they have tasked ZIMSEC to confirm whether the papers are genuine. This is the path we are taking because we have seen that a lot of people are conning the ministry through the system.”

Minister Ziyambi acknowledged the severity of the problem, noting:

“Indeed, it is true that we have such con artists who forge papers and pretend that they are qualified.”

Public Reaction And National Concern

The twin issues of funding and fraud have sparked a heated public debate about the future of Zimbabwe’s healthcare training. The potential scrapping of salaries has divided public opinion, with some supporting the move and others viewing it as a failure of governance.

Manicaland Senator Maxwell Mdhluri had previously raised alarms about the infiltration of unqualified personnel, warning that it endangered lives and wasted public funds.
