The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) says its Military Police arrested a man called Hardlife Nyoni

The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) says its Military Police arrested a man called Hardlife Nyoni on 13 May 2026 for pretending to be a soldier and scamming people with fake army recruitment promises.

 

Nyoni, who works as a general hand at Mkoba Teachers College, allegedly sent messages in a WhatsApp group using the name “General Talent Nyoni,” claiming he was recruiting people to join the army. He reportedly asked one applicant for US$100 to help with the recruitment process.

 

The applicant became suspicious and informed the Military Police. A trap was then set, and Nyoni was arrested in Harare CBD. When he was arrested, he had academic certificates and handcuffs, which police believe he used to appear genuine.

 

 

 

 

During questioning, he allegedly admitted that he had used the same trick on another victim and received US$200.

 

 

 

 

The ZNA warned the public to be careful of scammers pretending to be army officers. They said the army does not use third parties or charge money for recruitment applications. They also encouraged people to report such criminals to the police or army authorities.
