Trusting him, Matanhire took the money from her home and accompanied him to Blue Ridge Lodge for the supposed process. However, Mutanda had conspired with Chidawa and the others to steal the money.
At the lodge, after Matanhire handed over the money, the gang staged a fake police raid, pretending to arrest Mutanda while seizing the funds. They later shared the stolen money among themselves. The crime was exposed when Matanhire staged a fake robbery to hide the loss from her husband. CID Homicide detectives later arrested Mutanda, recovering items he had bought with the stolen money.
