LONDON — Jason Arday, a former University of Cambridge professor who resigned last week amid allegations of plagiarism, was found dead on Friday afternoon. The 41-year-old was discovered "unresponsive" at an address in Battersea, London.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed that a 41-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. The spokesperson added that his next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by officers. "At this time his death is being treated as unexpected, but is not believed to be suspicious," the statement said.

Arday made history in 2023 when he became the University of Cambridge's youngest black professor, serving as a professor of the sociology of education. According to a biography provided by the university, he was diagnosed with a form of autism spectrum disorder that meant he was unable to speak until age 11, or read and write until he was 18. He subsequently went to college, trained as a teacher, and launched an academic career that led to his appointment at the prestigious institution.

His recent resignation followed intense public scrutiny over his academic and personal background. The Daily Telegraph, which first published the plagiarism allegations, reported that Arday’s PhD thesis from Liverpool John Moores University contained "more than 100 passages that are identical or nearly identical to a 2009 PhD thesis" authored by a Brunel University student. The newspaper noted that Arday had credited the student 17 times within the work.

Other aspects of Arday's life also faced scrutiny. Claims that he had run 600 miles in six days and raised millions for charity were questioned. Additionally, individuals who said they attended school with him contacted the media to dispute the extent of his childhood speaking difficulties, stating that while he was often quiet, he was not mute.

In response to the allegations, Arday's supporters argued that he was the victim of racism. The University of Cambridge initially defended him, characterizing the allegations as a "vile" smear campaign. However, the university succumbed to pressure this week and agreed to launch an independent investigation into his appointment.

In his resignation letter, Arday stated that the criticism he faced went "far beyond scholarly disagreement". "The relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary have taken a profound toll on me and on those I love," he wrote, adding that his decision to step down should not "be mistaken for an acceptance of the narratives that have surrounded me".
