95 protesters were taken into custody by the Police following the March 31 protest at Freedom Square in Harare. According to reports, the demonstrators intended to march on State House and call for the resignation of President Emmerson Mnangagwa. According to authorities, they shared videos in a WhatsApp group called Nyokayemabhunu, threw stones at police, and chanted offensive slogans.
94 people were taken into custody by police at the scene, and social media later helped identify the 95th suspect. According to investigators, a South African phone number associated with a man named Knox Chiwer was used to operate the WhatsApp group.
Detective Sergeant Lovemore Chisi opposed bail, arguing:
- The charges are serious and carry a long prison sentence.
- The accused might run away before trial.
- Evidence from Nyokayemabhunu shows threats against police officers.
- They may continue protesting if released.
- Some suspects are still on the run.
Prosecutors pushed for the accused to stay in custody, and the judge denied bail. The investigation is expected to finish by April 15, with 20 witnesses set to testify. Families of those arrested have gathered outside the courthouse, demanding justice.
The case is ongoing as Zimbabwean authorities continue cracking down on political protests.
