THE ancestral human remains of Zimbabwe’s revered First Chimurenga heroes—including iconic martyrs Mbuya Nehanda, Sekuru Kaguvi, Chief Chinengundu Mashayamombe, Chief Chingairai Makoni, and Chiwashira, among others—are finally returning home from the United Kingdom after more than a century in British hands.
His Excellency President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa and First Lady Amai Dr Auxilia Mnangagwa will lead the nation tomorrow in receiving the sacred remains at a solemn state ceremony at the State Pavilion, Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.
The remains were forcibly taken during the late 19th century following the bitter anti-colonial war of resistance (1896–1897). As British colonial forces put down the First Chimurenga uprising, several key spirit mediums, chiefs, and military strategists were executed or killed in action.
In an act of imperial conquest, colonial authorities decapitated several of the resistance leaders and shipped their heads to the United Kingdom as war trophies, where they were kept as biological specimens in public museums, university collections, and private vaults across Europe.
Decades of diplomatic engagement between Harare and London have finally paved the way for their return, restoring national dignity and fulfilling long-standing cultural imperatives.
According to the official programme gleaned by Teapotcountrynews, invited guests, service chiefs, members of the diplomatic corps, and traditional leaders will assemble at the airport from 5:15 PM, ahead of the President's arrival at 5:55 PM.
The ceremony will include a formal briefing on the repatriation expedition, traditional cultural performances, and the official presentation of the remains to the President by the Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Dr Kazembe Kazembe. President Mnangagwa will subsequently address the nation at 6:50 PM.
