​### Rise Within the Party

• ​Liberation War Veteran: Mujuru rose to prominence as a prominent female commander within Mugabe's ZANLA forces during the Rhodesian Bush War. In 1977, she became the youngest member of the ZANU Central Committee.

• ​Youngest Minister: Following Zimbabwe's independence in 1980, she joined the cabinet at just 25 years old, serving in various ministerial roles over the next two decades.

• ​Vice Presidency (2004–2014): Backed by an influential party faction—including her husband, the late General Solomon Mujuru—she was appointed Vice-President and Second Secretary of ZANU-PF in December 2004. For a decade, she was widely considered the most likely democratic successor to President Robert Mugabe.

​### Fall and Expulsion

• ​The 2014 Purge: In late 2014, a factional power struggle intensified within ZANU-PF. Following a public campaign led by First Lady Grace Mugabe, Joice Mujuru was heavily denounced and accused of corruption, incompetence, and plotting to overthrow or assassinate Robert Mugabe.

• ​Ouster: In December 2014, Mugabe officially dismissed her from her post as Vice-President of the country.

• ​Formal Expulsion: On April 3, 2015, the ZANU-PF central committee formally expelled Mujuru from the party entirely.
