I am a concerned parent of a learner at Queen Elizabeth Girls High School in Harare.
There are kombis and illegal taxis (mushikashika) that regularly pick up and drop off passengers right at the school’s main gate. This morning, police were chasing kombis while learners were entering the school premises, creating a dangerous situation.
One girl who was trying to cross the road was almost hit by a vehicle during the commotion. Thankfully, no one was injured, but the incident highlighted the serious risk that these vehicles pose to learners.
We urge the relevant authorities to remove these kombis and mushikashika from the school entrance before a tragedy occurs. The safety of our children must come first. Besides the danger of road accidents, the presence of touts and illegal transport operators around the school creates an environment that is not suitable for young girls.
