The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has blocked a solidarity rally for jailed opposition politician Job Wiwa Sikhala.
The police claimed that the rally did not meet the requirements of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act (MOPA).
The organisers accused the police of using MOPA to stifle dissent and deny citizens their rights.
They condemned the systematic restriction of activities related to Sikhala and vowed to continue their efforts to demand his release.
The organisers stated that they would organise a series of solidarity activities to mobilise support for Sikhala's release.
They believe that the repression from the government shows their fear of Sikhala's name and his popularity among pro-democracy campaigners.
Sikhala has been in prison since June 2022 for alleged incitement of violence that erupted during the funeral wake of slain CCC activist Moreblessing Ali.
