Harare Roman Catholic Church on Francis Gano, accusing him of falsely presenting himself as a Catholic priest or Franciscan deacon in various parishes and communities.

The Archdiocese of Harare has issued a public circular warning priests, religious leaders and lay faithful about an individual identified as Mr. Francis Gano, accusing him of falsely presenting himself as a Catholic priest or Franciscan deacon in various parishes and communities. The circular, dated 23 July 2026 and signed by Archbishop Robert C.

Ndlovu, urges members of the Church to remain vigilant and refrain from recognising him as a member of the Catholic clergy. According to the circular, Mr. Gano has allegedly been preaching and acting as though he were an ordained minister of the Catholic Church. However, the Archdiocese states that he is neither a Catholic priest nor a deacon and has never received ordination or formation from recognised Catholic institutions. The statement further says he has no authority to preach, celebrate sacraments or perform any ministry within the Catholic Church, adding that he is a married man.

Citing the Code of Canon Law, the Archdiocese noted that a cleric must be lawfully ordained and incardinated into a diocese before engaging in ministry and cannot carry out ministerial duties without the permission of the diocesan bishop. As a result, the Archdiocese directed all priests and church leaders not to allow Mr. Gano to preach, celebrate liturgies, administer sacraments or undertake any ministry within the Archdiocese of Harare
