GAUTENG — The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng has launched a widespread manhunt following a mass shooting that claimed the lives of 12 people at the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland on Tuesday, June 9.

The attack, which occurred at approximately 11:10 p.m., also left multiple residents injured. According to police reports, officers responded to a complaint of a shooting in progress and arrived to find numerous victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Services were immediately dispatched to assist.

Preliminary investigations indicate a coordinated attack. It is alleged that more than 10 suspects were dropped off by a white Toyota Quantum near a petrol station in Cleveland. The armed individuals allegedly breached the informal settlement through both of its entrances and moved through the area, opening fire on residents at multiple locations before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle.

Eight adult males and three adult females were declared dead at the scene. One additional male victim later succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a hospital, bringing the death toll to 12. At least nine other victims were transported to various medical facilities for treatment of gunshot wounds.

Provincial and district detectives, supported by crime intelligence units and forensic experts, have been mobilised to investigate the incident and track down the perpetrators.

The motive for the massacre remains unknown and forms a central part of the ongoing police investigation.
