DUBAI, UAE – Authorities at Dubai International Airport have arrested 41-year-old Brighton Muzavazi, a Zimbabwean businessman, after allegedly discovering over 15 kilograms of gold bars hidden inside his suitcases.
Customs officials say Brighton arrived on a flight from Harare and appeared nervous during routine screening. Upon inspection, they allegedly found gold bars wrapped in clothing and electronics, estimated to be worth over USD $900,000 on the international market.
Investigators believe the gold may have been part of a larger smuggling network operating between Zimbabwe, South Africa, and the Middle East. Brighton is now facing serious charges under UAE anti-smuggling laws, which could carry a prison sentence of up to 10 years, plus heavy fines.
The case has caused a stir among Zimbabweans abroad, with heated debates on social media about the country’s ongoing illegal gold trade and its impact on the economy.
💬 Should Zimbabwe do more to crack down on gold smuggling, or is this just another case of individuals chasing quick riches?
