RIDA FERRY ACCIDENT VICTIMS MEMORIAL SERVICE UNDERWAY IN KARIBA
A memorial service for those who lost their lives in the RIDA passenger ferry accident on Tuesday is underway at Nyamhunga Stadium in Kariba, as families, friends and the community gather to honour the victims.

President Mnangagwa made the directive in a condolence message following the accident on Tuesday, which has so far claimed 44 lives, with the bodies retrieved as search operations continue for missing passengers.
The President also declared the incident a National Disaster and directed relevant authorities to provide affected families with medical, psychosocial and funeral support.
“This tragedy has exposed serious deficiencies in our maritime capabilities which we have to address immediately so that our places of recreation do not become death traps to the innocent,” President Mnangagwa said.
“Accordingly, I direct all agencies associated with our maritime safety, including, especially specialised units within our security forces, to take an active interest in ensuring remedial interventions in this area.”
The President said the Government was doing everything possible to account for those still missing, while survivors were to receive specialised health services and counselling to help them recover from the trauma.
“To those who survived, I wish them speedy recovery and I direct that our specialised health services provide suitable counselling to them so they are helped out of this traumatic experience,” he said.
President Mnangagwa expressed condolences to families who lost loved ones in the tragedy and praised security personnel and private citizens who responded to the incident under difficult conditions.
“Without their swift response, many more lives would have been lost in the rough and choppy conditions which obtained on the lake on the day,” he said.
The President said the Government would ensure that families affected by the tragedy receive the necessary assistance as the search and recovery operation continues.
The accident occurred on Lake Kariba on Tuesday, with the RIDA vessel capsizing in rough conditions.
President Mnangagwa called for national unity and prayers for those who died, the success of ongoing search operations, the speedy recovery of survivors and strength for bereaved families.
