Police in Nkayi have arrested two security guards, Mbekhezele Ngwabi (52) and Elisha Matsvai (45), following a shooting incident on 30 November 2025 at DGL5 Mine in Inyathi. The incident occurred after two illegal miners confronted the guards, demanding the release of their colleague who had been apprehended for illegal mining.
Ngwabi allegedly shot Thabo Ngwenya (24) in the chest and neck with a 12-bore rifle. Ngwenya died while being taken to hospital. Matsvai is reported to have shot and injured Nkosikhona Moyo (19), who sustained gunshot wounds to the eye and left arm.
